What is a muscle strain?

A muscle strain (also known as a tear) is  when too much pressure is placed on a muscle during normal daily activities, sudden heavy lifting/twisting or during sports.

This may cause damage (tearing) to all, or part, of the muscle fibres which make up the overused muscle.

We classify strains under 3 categories:

🔵 Grade 1 - mild damage to muscle fibres.

🔵 Grade 2 - more extensive damage to muscle fibres, usually bruising is seen.

🔵 Grade 3 - complete rupture of a muscle.

Muscle strains can cause pain, bruising, swelling and restriction in movement.
